Globalisation and the crisis of diplomacy On February 8th Dr. Steffen Bay Rasmussen International Law Assistant Professor at the University of Deusto visited Gaztelueta to talk IB students on diplomatic affairs. In the colloquium, professor Rasmusen explained how globalisation has provoked a crisis of traditional diplomacy among states. The question was: Why do we still need diplomacy when emailing and videoconferences allow instant communication across the globe and private firms are more powerful than many states?
Dr. Rasmussen holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Southern Denmark, an MA in European Studies from the University of Aalborg and a PhD in International Relations and Public International Law from the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU). He has previous experience from working in Estonia and the Netherlands. His research is primarily focused on the contemporary transformation of diplomacy and the particular case of the European Union.
